Dr Jeremy Green
(DLitt, MA, BSc, BA (Hons) )
Head of the WA Museum’s Department of Maritime Archaeology from 1971 until his retirement in July 2021, Dr Green has also been a leading light in the maritime archaeology field internationally. He has been involved in research in more than 15 countries and has developed multiple training programs, such as UNESCO Regional Workshops to advance underwater cultural heritage in countries including China, Thailand and Sri Lanka.
Dr Green is credited with achievements over five decades that have made Western Australia internationally renowned for best practice in marine archaeology and raised the profile of the State’s extraordinary maritime heritage.
He holds numerous positions, including membership of the Council for Nautical Archaeology, Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Social Sciences at UWA, Associate Professor at Curtin University and Affiliated Scholar at the Institute of Archaeology, Texas A & M University.
Dr Green has been the recipient of the Rhys Jones Medal – the Australian Archaeological Association’s highest award – and in 2017 was bestowed an honorary DLitt by the University of Western Australia.
In 2021, for his work on Dutch wrecks in Western Australia, he was made an Officer of Order of Orange Nassau – the highest award given to a non-Netherlands citizen.
