Recent news for Peter Veth is that he is a Chief Investigator on a newly awarded Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures – which includes seascapes. This $89M national Centre will scaffold 95 PhDs and 45 Postdocs and includes WAM and Flinders University. It starts in mid-2024.

Trevor’s expertise has been recently recognised by the WA Museum (WAM) and Flinders University. In August this year he was appointed as a Research Associate of WAM’s Department of Maritime Heritage. He has now just been awarded Adjunct Academic Status as an Associate Lecturer in Flinders’ College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. This recognition will assist Winwell Foundation’s mission to collaboratively undertake in-situ surveys and interpretation of sub-seabed materials, and support emerging practitioners.

Wendy, and her Flinders University colleagues Jonathan Benjamin, John McCarthy and Hiro Yoshida, received the Vice-Chancellor’s Innovation in Teaching Award for their development of an accredited micro-credential in Professional Scientific Diving — congratulations to them for improving future maritime archaeologists’ skill sets in the sea!

And also in the winners list is Andrew and his team from Curtin HIVE – they have won the 2022 WA Heritage Interpretation Project Award for their ‘Fremantle Then & Now: Historical Panoramas’ exhibition.

During the latter weeks of November and in early December, Winwell Foundation leapt into field action.

Together with MAAWA volunteers Patrick Morrison (current President), Ian Warne (former President), Ian McCann, Jess Green and Greg Flowers, the team with Trevor Winton undertook a preliminary site survey of the Bull Creek wreck site on the Canning River. The purpose of this survey was two-fold: 1) to relocate and map the exact location of the wreck previously surveyed by MAAWA member Col Cochrane in 1989; and 2) to determine the water depth above the river bed, and any timbers still protruding into the water column, for the future SBP survey. A fun and successful morning was had by all, and perhaps by now the smell and stain of the sticky mud has been washed off wetsuits and kayaks! A quick return to the site the following week during a super low tide confirmed where some of the timber frames protruded above the mud line.

A short time later the Winwell team, in collaboration with WA Museum’s Maritime Heritage Department (Drs Ross Anderson, Deb Shefi) and supported by MAAWA (Patrick Morrison and Dave Jackson), undertook underwater site preparation activities at the James Matthews wreck site and the adjacent ‘sleeper’ site on the north side of Woodman Point. Then, following installation of SBP and satellite position fixing equipment on Winwell’s vessel, Dr Doug Bergersen (Acoustic Imaging) and David and Trevor Winton spent two days implementing the SBP surveys. The first day was frustrating as we had to battle unseasonably strong winds which constantly blew us off track — fortunately calm post-dawn conditions prevailed the next day allowing us to collect in excess of 200 acoustic survey lines across the target sites, each approximately parallel and 25 cm apart, before the wind blew us home.

The newly appointed Professor in Maritime Archaeology at Germany’s Leiden University, Martijn Manders, is giving public lectures in Brisbane (14th Oct), Adelaide (18th Oct) and in Perth (27th Oct). His lectures will focus on archaeological sites that he has researched to highlight some of the history of the Dutch East India Company, or VOC. These presentations are open for the public—unfortunately the lecture and panel discussion in Brisbane has now been sold out, however both Flinders University and UWA invite you to attend their sessions as per the information below.

You may already know Professor Manders, but for those who do not here is some biographical information:

Biography of Professor Manders

Prof. Dr. Martijn Manders is a maritime archaeologist for the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE – Ministry of Education, Culture and Science) and professor in Underwater Archaeology and Maritime Cultural Heritage Management at the University of Leiden. Manders’ (52) experience in maritime archaeology spans over thirty years. He is a leading expert in dissemination of national and international research, protection and management of the underwater cultural heritage. At the RCE he coordinates the international maritime heritage portfolio, which includes the management of Dutch shipwrecks overseas. He often operates there where science and policy meet and he regularly advises other governments and large institutes on the subject. Manders is a board member of the International Committee on Underwater Cultural Heritage (ICOMOS-ICUCH). Examples of research he has been involved with: the excavation of the VOC ship Rooswijk in the UK, the disappearance of the Dutch WWII wrecks in the Java Sea, the Dutch submarines in Malaysia, the wreck of the Hoorn of the Southern Company in Argentina and the ARC Linkage project Roaring 40s in Australia. For UNESCO, Manders coordinates the Foundation Courses for underwater cultural heritage management in different parts of the world. Committed to public outreach and exposure for his field, he shares his knowledge and experience with a wide international audience by giving lectures and media appearances, among others for (Dutch) television and radio, talk shows and documentaries (National Geographic, Discovery Channel).

The #Rooswijk1740 project
Rooswijk was a Dutch East India Company vessel which sank on the treacherous Goodwin Sands, off Kent, in January 1740. The ship was outward bound for Batavia (modern-day Jakarta) with trade-goods. Now a protected wreck site the ship’s remains lie at a depth of some 20 metres. They are owned by the Dutch Government and managed by Historic England on behalf of the Department of Digital, Culture Media and Sport. The #Rooswijk1740 project is led and financed by RCE – the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, as part of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. In collaboration with Historic England and the dive contractor/ post excavation manager MSDS Marine Ltd. two seasons of excavation took place in 2017 and 2018.
There will be an opportunity to meet with Professor Manders at the Flinders Bedford Park tavern after his talk and enjoy drinks from 4pm onwards!
